Democracy Day: Nigeria’s Journey Of Uninterrupted Governance
Today, Nigeria joins the global community in marking Democracy Day, commemorating 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance. This milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the importance of democracy, the potency of legislative institutions, and the obligations of both politicians and citizens in nurturing an enduring democracy.
Democracy is powered by the will of the people, thriving when human rights and fundamental freedoms are upheld. It is a force for dignity, inclusion, and peace, a pathway to global recognition where every individual is equal before the law.
Nigeria present democracy is classified as a hybrid regime, grappling with electoral irregularities, politicized courts, shrinking civic space, and low voter turnout. The nation has witnessed democratic distortions, mandate theft, and governance challenges, underscoring the need for reforms.
In a democracy, the legislature is pivotal as the people’s representatives, voicing citizens’ interests. Crafting policies for societal progress. Ensuring accountability in governance. Curbing executive excesses. But the question is; are they up to standard and performing their constitutional duty?
Both Politicians and Citizens have obligations to play. While the politicians must uphold transparency, accountability, and internal democracy, citizens too must engage in civic education, demand performance, participate in issue-based voting.
As the world is celebrating Democracy Day, Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy is a commendable achievement. Sustaining it requires collective commitment to democratic principles, institutional robustness, and citizen engagement.
As Nigeria navigates democratic complexities, embracing virtue, reason, and popular sovereignty, echoing thinkers like Aristotle, Rousseau, can steer the nation toward a more inclusive, accountable governance. The future beckons a shift from ritual to reality, performance to principle.
