No Truth To Reports Of Ikpeazu’s Death Sentence
By Oyewumi Adeniyi
The recent viral report claiming that former Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, was sentenced to death by hanging for allegedly stealing N1 trillion is nothing short of laughable and mischievous. Ikpeazu himself has dismissed the claims, and rightly so. The timing of this fake news raises questions about the motivations behind it.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s struggle with corruption is real, and its impact is felt by every citizen. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed that no fewer than 58 former governors have looted, embezzled, laundered, or misappropriated a staggering N2.187 trillion in 25 years.
The EFCC’s efforts to bring corrupt officials to justice are commendable, but the lack of conviction of high-profile cases raises concerns about the effectiveness of our justice system.
The damage corruption has caused Nigeria is evident in the state of our education, health, and security sectors. Nigerians are not enjoying the wealth of the country, and it’s time for Nigerian leaders to take responsibility. The State Assemblies must be alive to their constitutional responsibilities of checks and balances to prevent future occurrences.
Rather than focusing on fabricated stories, Nigerians should be discussing the real issues plaguing the nation. Working towards a Nigeria where accountability and transparency are the norm, and leaders are held responsible for their actions.
The EFCC’s figures on the amount looted by former governors are staggering. N2.187 trillion is equivalent to the Lagos State 2024 budget of N2.25 trillion and the entire South-East states’ 2024 budget of N2.29 trillion. This amount could have been used to develop our infrastructure, improve our healthcare, and provide quality education for our citizens.
It’s time for Nigerians to demand better governance and accountability from our leaders. Nigerians must support institutions like the EFCC and the judiciary in their efforts to fight corruption. The State Assemblies must exercise their oversight functions to prevent future cases of corruption.
Nigerians should work together to build a country where leaders are accountable, and citizens can enjoy the wealth of the country. The fake news about Ikpeazu’s sentence to death is a distraction from the real issues. The focus should be on the problems that matter and work towards a better future for Nigeria.
